WTO report calls for more cooperation among governments in natural resource trade
Trading in natural resources creates a great many challenges both for importing and exporting countries and governments need to cooperate more intensively if these challenges are to be adequately addressed, according to WTO economists. Director-General Pascal Lamy said: “I believe not only that there is room for mutually beneficial negotiating trade-offs that encompass natural resources trade, but also that a failure to address these issues could be a recipe for growing tension in international trade relations”.
Actieplan Duurzame Handel moet armoede verminderen
Het bedrijfsleven, maatschappelijke organisaties en de overheid moeten beter gaan samenwerken op het gebied van duurzame handel met ontwikkelingslanden. Dat is een van de onderdelen van het Actieplan Duurzame Handel dat is uitgereikt aan ministers Verhagen en Verburg. Zij verwelkomen het plan en nodigen ondertekenaars uit om samen aan de slag te gaan.

In Colombia, the most vociferous opposition to the E.U. agreement has come from dairy farmers, because the large majority of dairy farms in Colombia are family-run or small-scale businesses, which are unlikely to be able to compete against more efficient, larger-scale European producers of high-quality milk products. The FTA envisages phased reduction over 17 years of Colombian tariffs on E.U. products in the sector.

The WTO’s week-long “stocktaking” of the Doha Round trade talks ended on Friday with a whimper, not a bang. The much-touted goal of concluding the negotiations toward a global trade deal before the end of 2010 - an objective laid out by heads of state last year - was quietly set aside, as officials acknowledged that political hurdles continue to block progress in the round, much as they have for the past 18 months.
Geen verbod op handel blauwvintonijn
De Japanse regering reageerde vrijdag opgelucht op het nieuws dat er geen verbod komt op de handel in blauwvintonijn. Premier Yukio Hatoyama waarschuwde wel dat Japan ‘op zijn hoede’ moet blijven. Voor zover hij doelt op het feit dat er nog steeds landen zijn die blijven proberen de tonijn voor uitsterven te behoeden, heeft hij ongetwijfeld gelijk.
Britse minister wil EU-India FTA tot eind van het jaar afgerond hebben (ENG)
Britse minister voor Internationale Ontwikkeling Gareth Thomas wil de onderhandelingen over de EU-India FTA eind 2010 afgerond hebben. De onderhandelingen voor het vrijhandelsakkoord zijn in 2007 begonnen en een verdere vertraging van het akkoord zou nadelig kunnen zijn voor handel en werkgelegenheid in zowel India als ook in het Verenigd Koninkrijk, het land dat de meeste zaken doet met India.
Nieuwe Franse kijk op EPA’s (ENG)
In december 2009 is er onder leiding van de Franse parlementariër Hervé Gaymard een rapport verschenen over EPA's. Het rapport stelt dat de focus van de partnerschapsakkoorden de afgelopen jaren is verlegd van ontwikkeling naar handel, wat volgens Gaymard teruggedraaid zou moeten worden.
